Our Story
Where tradition meets the
modern musician.
Sargam® was founded with one belief: that India's finest instruments deserve to reach the finest musicians — wherever they are. We bridge centuries-old ateliers in Varanasi, Miraj, and Chennai with players around the world.
It started with a problem. Our founder, a sitar student in Mumbai, spent months trying to source a professional-grade instrument without flying to Varanasi. What existed online was either unverified, overpriced, or simply inauthentic.
So we went directly to the source. We spent a year visiting workshops in Varanasi's Kabir Chaura district, the tanpura ateliers of Miraj, and the mridangam makers of Chennai — building relationships based on trust and fair compensation, not volume.
The result is Sargam®: a curated catalogue where every instrument has been played, evaluated, and approved before it is listed. No compromises.
We document each instrument's tonal profile — its warmth, resonance, and the skill level it suits — so you can make an informed choice without physically holding it. Our YouTube demonstrations are recorded in dry acoustic rooms with no post-processing.
We offer a 6-month craftsmanship warranty and a 7-day return policy for damaged or incorrect items. We pack every instrument ourselves, in reinforced double-walled boxes, because we know how it feels when a sitar arrives cracked.
We are a small team. We pick up the phone. We answer emails the same day.
What we stand for
Master Craftsmanship
Every instrument is built by luthiers who have spent decades learning their craft, many in families where the art has been passed down for generations.
Tonal Integrity
We select tonewoods by hand — teak, shisham, and aged rosewood — chosen not just for beauty but for the voice they give the instrument.
The Musician First
We are musicians ourselves. Every product description, every variant, every detail on this site is written from the perspective of someone who plays.
